That's not a nice thing to say about a game you've never played, you know :3.

Well, I was hitting on the one who said the price was high, not the one with the funny math skills. As to why specifically, she was cute, she was into several anime titles I was into, and she neither slapped me or ran away screaming which is better than a lot of my other interactions with females... Gee, Olf-san, why don't you just say "nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah!" (Okay, I'm kidding.)

I will get into Banner of the Stars soon, but first I'd have to see Crest of the Stars and I'm holding off on that for now. I'd like to finish up watching stuff like Fushigi Yuugi, Burn Up Excess (though I think I'm watching that mainly for the "jiggle counter") and Vandread first. Maybe next month since Strawberry Eggs and Saber Marionette J to X series will be finishing up and I'm only adding the Mahoromatic series so far.

*blinks* Okay, I so need to get a life one of these days...

So, I am not going to joke around the way we were used to anymore.

<== And that was really my last off-topic-joke.

I can see how long that will last...

Crest/Banner of the Stars is easily better than any of those, with the possible exception of Strawberry Eggs which I have not seen. In fact, Crest/Banner is probably better than any two of those put together (again possibly excepting Strawberry Eggs).

*shrugs*

Fair enough.

That really depends on how you're comparing them and what you're looking for. From what I understand, Crest/Banner is more epic in nature while most of the ones I mentioned are more episodic, so they're structured and targeted differently. So it's like comparing a mini-series to a bunch of sitcoms, and which is better depends on which angle you're coming from.

Why do I bring it up? Just wanted to point out that you could have just gone over why you think Crest/Banner is good without trying to sway me with a general comparisson argument. It's still on my "to see" list but right now I'm really don't want to see something "epic", so it's not really on my urgent "must see right now" list. (But to fair, very little ever is on that list.)

It’s hard to describe what makes Crest of the Stars so good, especially when you’re exhausted. I’ll just say that I don’t know anyone-literally-who has seen it and not thought it kicked ass.

Exhausted? You doing overtime with the soul collection again?

Er, actually I do have a couple of friends who didn't like it. But like I said, people look for different things so it's not that big a deal. Enough people who's opinions I respect have said it's good and that's why I will see it eventually. (Assuming I ever leave work again...)

No, I went out of town and came back the same day.

What? Damn them for ruining my rhetoric!

*runs off to hire a hit man. Or woman. Or lemon.*

Anyway, I'll try to explain without resorting to stating how highly most people think of it.

* The show is based off a series of novels that, as I understand, singlehandedly saved Japanese science fiction. (Wait, this is a populist argument again.)

* The show invents a completely fictitious universe, and manages to make a fictitious society seem real.

* There is actual science! And it actually (sort of) makes sense! (At one point an airlock is opened, and the pool of water in the room starts boiling off. Me and my roommate, who were both watching and are both engineers, went nuts when we saw this.) The pseudoscience the author invented to explain space travel is good as well; not only is it well thought out but it's actually almost plausible.

* The show has some of the best characterization I have yet seen in any anime. The main characters are some of the best I've ever seen, anywhere, and even the supporting cast is well developed.

* Finally, the show is based off of a book series, and not a manga. It's harder to quantify the effects of this, but it's quite noticeably. The show is a refreshing change of pace from most anime, simply because the original source material is so different than the source of most anime.

FYI, so is Slayers. Nonetheless, the anime feels a lot like many other anime...

There's a manga as well, so it was more of a universal production effort. But your point is still well taken.

I'm NOT hiring out any of my lemons, for sure. And I doubt that Ladyphoenix would hire out any of hers either .

no no no, the lemons are sacred creatures with a divine purpose, not to be used for simple hits

Well, that's also because you have the "Bishoujo Ninja Division" to do your hits for you.

The novels are the original works. From that, the anime were made then (since it was successful) the manga. So, no, it's not an "universal production effort" as in "it was planned from the beginning to do anime and manga versions".

EDT: it's the same for Lodoss, BTW (and "Weathering Continent"). You have first the novels then the anime adaptation (then several mangas for Lodoss).

This thread is too long, and it already has no bearing on its original topic of Memory Refreshment.

Huh. That's weird. So do the novels end where Slayers Try ends, or do they go on?

That division is only used in special cases .

Weird? Why? And, no, because "Try" was an original anime scenario. 1st and 2nd series almost completely derive from the novels, but not "Try"...
