So how many here watch anime and read manga

Sorry to perhaps ask another question away from particular anime being discussed, but I was wondering if anyone has heard of an anime and/or manga called Maburaho. Is it only in Japan at the moment or does it have another name that it has been released under in the U.S.?

Nope it's only released in Japan right now since it's airing on TV. I think their first dvds should just be about now in japan. Since it's so new it hasn't been liscensed yet by a US company. But my guess is that it will shortly as it looks like the type of anime that us companys would drool over

Why? Not like most of us have the longest of attention spans as it is. And speaking of which...

Broke down today and picked up Someday's Dreamers. Also picked up Angelic Layer #3, Rune Soldier #6, and Pretear #2. And I still havn't watched the .Hack//Sign #5 or Sakura Wars OVA I bought last week. I forsee a lot of late night anime sessions in the future for me... Thanks, and that is promising, from what I have seen of it through various reviews. which told me almost everything but it was currently airing in Japan, it looks like one that might be very interesting to see, I look forward to the day it will be released in the U.S. Well that or when I can get a region free DVD player so I can buy it from a Japanese company. Speaking of which do they put subtitles on the original copies they release in Japan or not until they release them in U.S.?

How are the Angelic Layer, and Pretear animes are either more recommended then the others? I am also curious how you like Sakura Wars OVA I have heard reviews which have praised it as a stand alone feature and reviews which said don’t see it unless you have seen the series several times, so I am curious which you find to be true.

Angelic Layer is mecha style combat only that the mecha are high tech 1/6 scale dolls played on combat table. Since they are computer - thought controled devices age or sex is not a limit. Another CHAMP classic kind of a cross between Magic Knight Rayearth , Card Captor Sakura and any MECHA series for character and mecha designs.
The Sakura Wars OVA I am thinking of is a pre-introduction to the the CONSOLE GAMES. Don't you just love steam powered Mecha

I got mixed feelings after watching the first episode preview of Angelic Layer (from NewType's DVDs). In a way, it looks like a hash of Medabots and, at the end, it will sound like it will be (to paraphrase Star Wars) "I am your mother!".

BTW, it is CLAMP

AFAIK, it is the other way around. Most people I showed Sakura Wars felt more clueless after the series than before watching it. It made the assumptions you had background knowledge of the characters.

Picky Picky Picky.
CLAMP is the CHAMP.

I am not sure how it will end, but it is very action packed as she advances closer to the finals.

So the movie made more sense to the people seeing it before the series then after the series?

Hmm, from what I've seen, most everything (games and DVDs) intended for the Japanese market doesn't have subtitles. If you look through the J-List DVD listings, some will specifically say they have English subtitles, otherwise you can assume they don't have any.

Angelic Layer was something I picked up the manga for because it was a CLAMP title. Then I thought, because of it's nature, it would be great as an anime. Plus, the manga version has a bunch of, er, "tie-ins" with the Chobits manga. (The anime has it to a lesser extent.) Some of us like the series, some of us don't.

Pretear was something I had heard about here and it interested me enough. A sort of redoing of the "Snow White" tale. (There's even a few major "hints" in the anime if you missed the connection.) I do really like this one, even if they ended volume 2 at a point where I'm just screaming for volume 3. Plus, I tend to really like Yoko Ishida's theme songs... As for the Sakura Wars OVA, should be interesting. It's another series I'm familiar with without ever seeing an episode or playing the related game. I just kept watching to Pioneer (er Geneon) preview for the movie and finally said, okay, I guess I'll just go ahead and watch it already!

I will say this:

Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu is an extremely inspired, totally whacked out, completely INSANE show. It’s great fun.

Hmm "tie-ins" with Chobits if done nicely that could be quite an interesting feature of the manga, I think I will check out the manga first.

Another question, does anyone know how many Happy Lesson Manga books there are? So far there seems to be only one released in the US however, they are already releasing the Anime, is that usual?

I have never paid attention before with other series but I just noticed it with this series. I know there is Crest of the Stars which I believe never had the manga come out in the U.S. prior to the release of the entire anime series, but is this unusal?

I guess no one knows how many are in the manga series?

As far as the Happy Lesson manga, I only know of 2 volumes… there may be more though, I’m not sure.

For Crest of the Stars, both the anime and manga are based off a series of novels.

Since anime caught on in America before manga did, it was very common to see the anime released first. But now that manga has gained popularity as well, it’s frequent to see both get released over here… often at the same time.

Yeah, Comic Party (TV) is scheduled to release in Spring 2004 and the manga (by Tokyopop) in June 2004. However, the opposite might also be true. For instance, Chobits manga was released in April 2002 and the anime was released in 2003 (all of them, BTW, refers to release date in the US). However, still, there are some released manga which I am still waiting for it's anime counterpart (Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo is the first one that comes to my mind).

I am mostly starting to bridge the gap, I guess you could say, of the series that are both Anime and Manga, and so far I have not found a lot of name changes, but in Happy Lesson it seems that that the main male character has a name change. Is it common to change just one character’s name when making the transition?

I read little manga so I can't tell, but I suspect Anime and Manga have very few major changes as compared going between a book and say a movie. Lets be happy that both end up being the mostly same.

PS.
Now what I want to know is how the 'e's were lost in BS from 'Marin'

You have a good point, at least we don’t start watching the anime and say “Um whose that, and whose that, and why are they suddenly in Santa Fe when the novel had them set it Kyoto?” Anime thankfully does not do that and that is something to be greatful for, lack of many major changes if any major changes.

Forgive me but what is BS beyond the only thing I can think of in an anime sense which is Banner of Stars or do you mean the game Brave Soul?

Well if you are importing R2 anime, you assume there is no english sub as the vast majority of R2 discs don't have them. If they do they will most certainly list them as a feature to the disc. Which is why I mainly stick with R1 stuff that and R2 can cost an arm and a leg

I got Pretear 1 but haven't seen it yet so I can't really comment on it and I really didn't like the summaries of Angelic Layer and the clips I saw of it so I skipped getting that. Though I might get the manga since it is by CLAMP and they have such pretty chara designs. As for Sakura wars ova and movie I was pretty much lost watching it alought I like the character desgins I think if I played the games, and understood more about the history and backstory I would love it.

It really depends, sometimes it's differences in how the name is romanized. Other times the "higher ups" thinks renaming to a cooler name would sell more copies. Normally I don't mind if it's a romanization difference, but if it's just to "americanize" the series then I get upset enough where I won't buy the series at all.
