So how many here watch anime and read manga

I have heard some saying that anyway, ah well, what's next for Happy Lesson the other series?

Recently too I learned that Chrono Crusade in DVD form is suppose to have the frist DVD out this fall.

I have a question about Detective Conan or Case Closed, whichever, you prefer.

There is no quesiton of the editing in terms of names and perhaps the theme songs being turned “English” but as far as the DVD’s go, and I know they are not out yet, but has anyone heard if there has been editing even for the DVD’s?

I ask because recently on one site they mentioned each episode is 23 minutes long, but FunImation, with their typical three episode per disc thing, lists a total disc being 62 minutes long which means there is a missing 7 minutes. Now either the 23 minutes is wrong and each episode is only about 21 minutes, the 62 minutes is wrong and the disc is really 69 minutes or there actually is a missing 7 minutes.

Has anyone heard if the DVD’s are uncut at this time or not? All the informtion found in my searches involves slight outrage about the editing of names and nothing about this, but before any further consideration is given to buying these shows I am just curious if they actually have been edited in terms of time or content, which seems strange for the DVD’s themselves.

From what I read from Anime Prime, my prime source for anime editing, the only thing they did was the title change, names change, and script change.

Well supposedly there's a ep 4-5 in the ova so I'm hopping they have it and will be releasing it. Other than that yeah there's still the new series Happy Lesson Advanced that isn't out yet but no one knows if they have liscense to it.

Yeah supposedly Chrono crusade is suppose to be out this fall but we'll really have to wait and see if it's going to happen as it's still not done in japan yet.

I would take the printed runtimes on the dvds with a grain of salt as they are rarely accurate and depending on company they have different ways of deriving their runtimes. Manga states a 90 minute runtime for blood the last vampire when it’s a 45min ova. So far besides the name changes and song dubs the only other major gripe I heard about is the the skipping of episodes. Right now we probably have to wait till the discs are out til we find out what they have done to them.

Okay thank you, what do you mean "skipping of episodes" that they might have episode 4 follow episode 2 and someday come back to episode 3 or skip episode 3 entirely?

I am curious how you like the series, I have only seen the first one that came free with one of the Newtype magazines and it looks like it could be very good. Yet without knowing anything but the reviews in a magazine that gave me a free copy of the disc, perhaps not the best source for unbiased review if there is such a thing, it is just something I would like to hear more opinions on if anyone else has seen more then the first show?

Finally had a chance to watch Kaleido Star. So far, I do like it. Very vibrant animation, and I already mentiond how I really like the OP song. (The ED song isn't that bad either.) Granted, there's a bit of cliche in some of the characters and situations, but being placed in the circus venue (which I don't remember seeing before) lessens the blow. A good mix of situations, characterization and pacing. I'm already looking forward to the third volume.

Hmm, I am amused by the fact that despite being set in America, the only words in English I remember anyone saying is by Sora herself. Yes, I know it's meant for a Japanese audience so of course everyone speaks Japanese, but it's still amusing to me. I'm also amused by Fool and his whole "bathing" obsession... Well I'm not sure since I really don't follow dective conan. But from what I've heard they skipped an entire season on CN. So people were wondering what they were going to do with the DVDs.

Cool, sounds like a series worth checking out once money is saved up again.

Why does everyone speak 20th century English in Star Trek? "Universal translators." Riiiiiight.

This is something you more or less acknowledge, then turn right around and ignore for the sake of the sanity of the actors, the screenwriters, the audience ... generally, everyone (except the weird people who go become 'fluent' in Klingon).

Well yes but if you follow the idea of the Universal Translator doesn't it work where if you are fluent in Japanese only then everything said is in Japanese even if I am standing next to you and for me everything said is in English and for someone else perhaps German or French?

Anyway, if they have such technology someday and it actually works it would save a lot of time learning another language or with waiting for dubs as some do, might not be as fun but would save time.

Also isn't there a Star Trek manga coming out? Somewhere I thought it was written Tokyopop is producing one?

How do you skip an entire season without running into glaring continuity problems such as a character suddenly appearing and being part of "the family" that might not have existed the show before?

I can see Cartoon Network skipping a season perhaps (but it even seems odd for them to do such a thing) if that season was extra bloody or violent by their view but I would hope it would not be the case with the DVD's. That would make no sense at all to just skip a season on the DVD's unless it was never dubbed for some other reason.

Yes, but we've never really been concerned with sanity here have we?

Well from what I’ve read Dective Conan is pretty episodic so you could miss large sections of episodes without really getting lost.

I thought most of us here tried to avoid it as much as possble?

Well on a different anime, I have learned for those that like Martian Successor Nadesico, as I really enjoy it, ADV will be re-releasing it in 3 two-disc sets replacing the old subtitles with “soft” subtitles and replacing the audio, at least English dub, with Dolby 5.1 sound. It’s interesting they are doing this now to me since they already had the full collection released and also that ADV is not releasing the update in a full collection format as of this time.

Goes with the territory I think, most of us are very liberal thinkers and speaking as one, a few of those I know can be considered fully sane, which is actually a very good thing.

Heh you must have missed all the flack they got when they first released nadesico from all the hardcore otakus Besides now they gave a reason for the people who bought the origional release and was pissed with the overlays to double dip and buy this new release with overlays removed and cleaned up script.

Overlays? What'd they overlay?

I think having seen it recently anywhere there was kanji in the original they placed a box over it with English but it was a box that flickered at times and jumped around a little bit on the screen and there were times it just was not there, so if you missed what box one said the first time you might not see it without rewinding.

This then might be another part of what they changed actually, so now every time there was originally kanji on say a computer output or screen it will now appear each time in English rather then just occasionally in English.

Oh I heard about some of the flack they took, people were saying something like "It's a great anime, wonderful anime except for these overlays" and that was the nicest way it was phrased. Yeah they probably will get me to check it out someday and see how the new way of placing the subtitles works.
