The TV show is very odd. The characters' high school careers are about to end, so not just the show, but the franchise is most definitely over. They won't all go to the same college and in fact won't graduate at the same time. The interplay between the main cast was such a main focus that without it, there IS no show. Barring some sort of deus ex machina just to get the cast together again, it's not possible to do more.
And yet, it wasn't enough. Unless my fansub translation was incorrect, they almost dealt with the Takeo (sp? main guy) and Sae angle - but they blinked at the last second. There were a number of other changes in the characters, but nothing was totally resolved.
From an odd point of view, this makes it a better show - they ARE only high schoolers, after all - but it's...very odd watching a show that ends properly without pulling an "and then they all lived happily ever after" AND without resolving anything.
I had hoped that at least the manga kept going past the TV show (even though I can't read it), but then I read the manga was made from the anime and not the more usual reverse.
So my opinions on the TV show are divided. I respect it more than I would a show with a more traditional ending, and yet I wanted a more traditional ending. Perhaps that's a sign that it's good art - that the characters managed to touch me so.
